Each of us heard about a detective Sherlock Holmes, right?

Thousands and millions of Russian speakers are familiar with good old soviet series "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson" with such amazing actors as Vasily Livanov (in 2006 became an Honorary Member of the Order of the British Empire) and Vitaly Solomin. By the way, that movie was shot in Riga and the well-known Baker street in reality is called Jauniela. Of course, Rigans do remember this fact and are proud of this bond with great Holmes. So since just couple of years every January the celebration of detective's birthday is held in Riga. The main activity is a costume parade in which everyone can participate by creating an image of any of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's characters. The best images are awarded with special prizes. You can see that even all family members did participate in the parade. Have to admit that all the participants do a really good job in creating looks and a lot of them are super inspiring! Other activities include dog parade, movie festival "Sherlock Holmes Cinema", Holmes style photo shoots, etc. (full list of activities can be found on the official website, see below)
Popularity of Mr. Holmes had increased over the last couple of years. It's all due to Guy Ritchie's movie starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law, as well as a new British TV-series "Sherlock" with Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman. The last one is, by the way, a contemporary adaptation and here Sherlock is using Internet, smart phone, laptop... everything that the original one could never dream about. And it looks like that even in modern London there is a job for inimitable Holmes.
Could Sir Conan Doyle ever think that his work will become classics of the genre and Holmes and Watson will be transformed into the characters of the 21st century? Of course, no. Such characters are eternal, they will always be demanded, regardless of time and place.I guess, that's what sets a really outstanding works and their creators apart.
